Chapter 15

Valley of the Kings, Egypt

“I feel like a Bedouin dressed like this,” complained Rael, walking down the ramp and exiting onto the shore.

“If we’re lucky, people will mistake us for two of them,” replied Boudicea.

“Then we’re no longer posing as Canadian tourists?”

“Not for much longer.”

It was official, then: They were leaving the boat, and the vacation part of the trip was over. It seemed rather pointless to book a boat trip up the Nile and depart before it reached the end of the trip. Then again, most of the passengers were departing today anyway for a day trip. This was a major tourist spot, and the shoreline was bustling with activity. The thing was, while everyone else was departing to see the sights, Boudicea had a more permanent exit in mind. Which was odd, particularly if the source of the Nile was what they were seeking—and Rael had assumed it was, given Ariadne’s message. This boat was sailing further up the Nile, so why get off before the end?

Rael heard the stubborn grunt of a camel. Soon after, the captain of the boat arrived with two camels in tow. He said to Boudicea, “I have had my people pack up your things onto these two camels, as you requested. I do warn you, it would be better if you stayed with the tour. The open desert can be a dangerous place for women.”

“We will be okay,” replied Boudicea.

“You crazy Americans take too many chances,” he said.

“We’re Canadian,” corrected Boudicea.

He threw his hands up in the air and replied, “If you will not listen to reason, then Allah please look after you with fortune, because I will not be responsible for you.” He returned to his boat ramp to escort other guests.

Boudicea handed the reins of a camel to Rael. She said, “You do know how to ride a camel, right?”

“Sure, we did it all the time back home in Colorado.”

Boudicea mounted, and her camel stood up. Rael climbed aboard hers. It just sat there. Rael pulled on the reins. “Up!” she commanded. It lay down. She could feel Boudicea watching her, judging. Camel riding seemed like a dirty test to throw at an American teenager. Rael complained, “I think mine is defective.”

Boudicea lectured, “It is easy. Just remember, the camel dislikes you, and it will bite you and spit at you when needed. It is up to you to show it who is boss. Only then will it respect you.”

“That sounds just lovely.” Rael’s camel was already eyeing her with suspicion. She’d almost suspect it of being a demon if not for the smell. No, it couldn’t be a demon, because no demon smelled as bad as this camel. She gently pulled the reins again. “Giddyap, up, up, up.” The camel wasn’t buying what she was selling and appeared to fall asleep.

Rael looked to Boudicea for help. Boudicea looked distracted. She was watching a party from the boat heading off into the distance. They were all setting off to sightsee.
